Nail Health - 7 Tips To Avoid Split Nails

Go on, admit it. You got impatient on the bus home and peeled off your gel manicure. Now you’re left with dry and brittle nails, wondering how to get them back to their former glory. Fear not! We’ve put together some top tips on how to keep your nails nice and healthy, increasing their strength and allowing for easy to apply manicures.

Understand the science behind nails

If you get your head around the science of nails, it helps you to understand why correct gel polish removal is so important. Nails are made up of lots of cells called keratinocytes, which produce keratin - a type of protein that is the basic component of hair and nails. By peeling off your gel manicure, you are not only removing the polish but also layers of these delicate cells. This can result in irregularities, white patches and split nail tips. Nails can take up to six months to grow back and repair themselves, making it even more important to maintain your nail health.

Remove gel polish properly

If you’ve used our traditional Gel Base & Top Coat or any other kind of gel base coat, it’s important to remove your polish correctly. This involves gently buffing the shiny top layer of polish from your nail whilst being careful not to buff through to the natural nail, using cotton pads and foil pouches to soak the nails in SensatioNail Gel Polish Remover and using the Removal Tool correctly. For a step by step guide, read our How to Remove Gel Nail Polish blog post and have a go at using our Removal Kit & Tool Bundle.

Try our new StripGel Peel Off Base Coat

StripGel Peel Off Base Coat is a revolutionary new product which requires no acetone or soaking. It is an air-dry base that helps you easily remove SensatioNail Original gel polish from nails by simply peeling it off when ready, without damaging nails and maintaining up to 2 weeks of gel manicure wear. Read how to apply and remove.

Gently buff your nails

Lightly run a buffer over any uneven edges or ridges to smooth your nails prior to any manicure. This will help further peeling, and get those nail tips in tip top condition. Use our Nail Buffer Block or single Nail Buffer Sticks. Note: the coarsest side of the buffer should not be used on natural nails - this is for removing Gel Polish. Our Manicure and Pedicure Set also includes a selection of electric nail buffers to help avoid those pesky split nails. Please note: it’s important not to buff your nails too aggressively and to keep it light.

Moisturise your hands and cuticles regularly

In between manicures, it’s good to keep your hands and cuticles well moisturised. We recommend using cuticle oil or hand cream that does not contain any lanolin, and ensuring any excess cream is removed from around and under your nails to avoid lifting. After application, lay a hot towel over your hands for a few minutes to let everything soak in.

Keep your nails short

For long nail lovers amongst you, this suggestion will be hard to digest. However, if you’ve got yourself into a split nail situation, they will be very fragile and one little nick could lead to a painful tear. It will help to give long nails a break for a while, filing them back to a shorter length and allowing them to grow back healthily. Make sure to carefully file your nails in one direction - not back and forth.

Use a nail treatment

SensatioNail have developed a range of nail treatments to help keep your natural nails in perfect condition for example, our Strengthen & Smooth Nail Treatment is infused with antioxidant vitamins A and E to nourish nails and help get them stronger and longer. It also smooths out nail ridges and helps protect against splitting. This can also be used as a base coat for your SensatioNail manicures. Our popular Protect and Grow treatment will be back in stock soon, we promise and we are launching more nail treatments (including a new cuticle oil) in 2018, watch this space!
